And three giant Costa cruise ships are anchored near La Spezia, "motors running, lights on, and with small crews aboard," Fortune reporter Eric J. Lyman wrote. The Costa Concordia began taking on water after it struck a reef, leading to a chaotic evacuation process to save the lives of passengers and crew members. Addressing the negligence that led to the catastrophic event, the Italian courts held crew members and the crisis coordinator accountable. Four crew members and the ship’s crisis coordinator pled guilty to various offenses in a critical Concordia cruise ship salvage update.
Sunken but Not Forgotten: Commemorating the 32 Lives Lost
Captain Schettino, often referred to as Captain Costa Concordia, has been pivotal in the narrative, facing widespread vilification for decisions that led to the shipwreck. The gravity of the captain’s choices that fateful night is anchored deeply in the consciousness of the maritime industry and those affected by the disaster. Off the coast of Italy, Costa Concordia is one step closer to being towed to its final resting place. The total cost of the disaster, including victims' compensation, refloating, towing and scrapping costs, is estimated at $2 billion, more than three times the ship's $612 million construction cost. Costa Cruises offered compensation to passengers (to a limit of €11,000 per person) to pay for all damages, including the value of the cruise; one third of the survivors took the offer. Thirty-two people lost their lives when the Costa Concordia cruise ship struck a reef and subsequently began to sink in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

My involvement in the Costa Concordia scrapping process allowed me to witness first-hand the sophistication and the scale of operations required to counteract the damage. Approximately 500 international salvage experts collaborated on what would become a historic mission, utilizing advanced underwater platforms and cranes to parry further environmental injury. The Costa Concordia shipwreck, challenging as it was, brought together numerous stakeholders, from environmentalists to engineers, all dedicated to mitigating its impact.

The crew of 1,300 had first observed a 14-day quarantine before reporting for duty. The ship will set off with around 1,500 passengers on board - a quarter of its full capacity. The flagship Costa Smeralda set off from the port of Savona after being landbound since December when the Italian government banned cruises due to the coronavirus crisis. The Genoa port authorities confirmed to AFP that the Italian positive cases were taken home by the civil protection services, while foreign passengers who tested positive were transferred to medical facilities. The Costa Concordia wreck site resonates with a quiet that belies the intense dramas once played out on its decks. What remains is a powerful testament to humanity’s respect for nature in the face of disruptive events.

Their sentences, marked by the gravity of the incident, were relatively short but underscored collective culpability. Reflecting on the Costa Concordia as it stands now, the remnants of the once majestic cruise liner continue to captivate and serve as a poignant emblem of a maritime catastrophe. Submerged in the Mediterranean’s depths, the vessel no longer traverses the world’s waters but has embarked on an eternal, anchored existence. In the wake of the trial, reflections on Captain Schettino‘s pivotal role entailed recognizing the stark contrast between his actions and the exemplary behavior expected of individuals in his command. It points to an overarching and pressing need for stringent adherence to the tenets of maritime conduct and the weighty responsibility resting on ship commanders. The ramifications of Captain Schettino’s decisions on that doomed voyage endure, as poignant lessons in accountability ripple through communities and industries worldwide. The Costa Concordia was a testament to the prowess of its owner, Costa Crociere, a subsidiary of the world-renowned Carnival Corporation & PLC. Navigating Through Tragedy: Captain Francesco Schettino’s Role
As an observer and reporter, I’ve seen firsthand how a once vibrant vacation remnant is now a silent watchdog, ensuring the sanctuary’s safety. The sunken cruise ship, a convergence of human tragedy and ecological peril, has become an inadvertent monument to both. The tragic story that unfolded during the sinking of the Costa Concordia has etched itself into maritime history as a series of grave errors and unfortunate events. I remember the images of the luxury liner, a symbol of elegance and joy, which turned into a harrowing spectacle of fear and panic as it capsized off the Italian coast. To understand the gravity of that fateful night’s situation, let’s walk through the timeline that led to the Costa Concordia incident. It took a massive operation and $1.5 billion to refloat the Costa Concordia cruise ship.
“The sooner we can resolve it, the sooner the victims can get on with their lives, they can put this behind them. We are anxious to do that, but not so anxious to compromise on our will to change the industry for better standards,” John Arthur Eaves, Jr., an Alabama-based lawyer representing several American survivors of the disaster, told NBC News. Former President Donald Trump is facing criminal charges of falsifying business records over alleged "hush money" payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
Approximately 300 souls remained onboard as the last crew detached, spurring a flurry of survival strategies, including climbing down ladders in a landscape where decks had transformed into walls. In my carnal pursuit of sharing this catastrophe’s account, I am reminded of how closely we skirt the edges between safety and danger and the immeasurable responsibility of those commanding such grand vessels. The sinking of the Costa Concordia, a spectacle of disbelief and sorrow, is a stark reminder of the fleeting nature of security in the face of human error and natural forces. A pre-trial report, leaked to Italian media weeks before the trial, places much of the blame on Schettino. “We are losing sight of the victims of this tragedy, but they could line the pockets of the shamed captain,” the member said. Video taken by passengers at the time showed scenes of chaos and confusion as the Costa Concordia started to list heavily.
"As per protocol, the COVID-positive passengers and their relatives were immediately isolated in balcony cabins and received medical attention," MSC's communications department said. An angry member of an Italian consumer association told NBC News it would be raising a formal objection to Schettino’s presence in court. In the intervening months, Schettino has sought to restore his reputation and set the record straight by giving his version of events. “It was a night that, in addition to being a tragedy, had a beautiful side because the response of the people was a spontaneous gesture that was appreciated around the world,” Ortelli said. But after eight years in the U.S. and then Italian court system, they lost their case. As the Costa Concordia made its final journey out of the port of Giglio, some survivors and families of victims looked on as a final farewell.
During the 19-month trial, prosecutors claimed that he was an “idiot,” while Schettino countered that his actions had saved lives and that he was being scapegoated. In addition, he noted the steering error by the helmsman, but a maritime expert testified that regardless of the mistake, the collision was unavoidable. In February 2015 Schettino was convicted on all charges and sentenced to more than 16 years in prison.
As the wake of the Costa Concordia tragedy continued to spread, the legal repercussions for those involved were swift and significant, signaling a new chapter of accountability following the maritime disaster. The latest news on Costa Concordia reverberated through the corridors of justice as several crew members faced the consequences of that fateful night. In the next few days, Schettino, the eight other people accused, and the many survivors and families of victims, will learn if he will face charges over the deaths of 32 people after his ship run aground off Giglio island on Jan. 13. I left the bar and found myself stumbling along sloping corridors with passengers and crew members. "I imagine it like a nail stuck to the wall that marks that date, as a before and after," he said, recounting how he joined the rescue effort that night, helping pull ashore the dazed, injured and freezing passengers from lifeboats. Italy will mark the 10th anniversary of the Costa Concordia cruise ship disaster on Thursday with a daylong commemoration.
A Carnival cruise was anything but a carnival for thousands of sea-sick passengers caught up in a coastal storm over the Memorial Day weekend. Carnival Cruise Line told Insider in a statement that the ship's "return to Charleston was impacted by the weather and rough seas on Saturday." Passenger Sharon Tutrone, a professor at Coastal Carolina University, tweeted Friday that the ship was rocking. She said that the only time passengers heard from the captain was in the afternoon, when he told them he had an experienced crew and would do everything he could to minimize discomfort as the ship encountered the storm. Regular safety audits and inspections play a critical role in identifying potential weaknesses and areas of improvement within a cruise ship’s operation.

Cruise lines must continually evaluate and enhance their safety protocols to ensure the well-being of their passengers in the event of a similar incident in the future. The Carnival Sunshine Storm Incident of 2023 left a lasting impact on the passengers who were on board the ill-fated cruise ship. Many passengers have shared their harrowing experiences of the storm, recounting the terrifying moments when the ship was tossed around by powerful waves and buffeted by strong winds. During the Carnival Sunshine Storm Incident, the response of both passengers and crew members played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of everyone on board.

Furthermore, fostering open communication channels is vital for a strong safety culture. Employees should feel comfortable reporting safety concerns or near-miss incidents without fear of retribution. This allows for timely identification and resolution of potential hazards, preventing them from escalating into full-blown emergencies.

"It was only 45 minutes later that Captain Contarino came over the intercom system to let everyone know that due to adverse weather conditions, we may arrive later in port than scheduled," Taylor said. "He also advised that the staff would do everything they could to minimize any discomfort." The 128,250-gross-ton Carnival Dream can welcome 3,646 guests at double occupancy, or as many as 4,633 passengers when fully booked with all berths filled. The ship is homeported from Galveston, Texas year-round, offering mostly 6- and 8-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries, with occasional longer voyages on her schedule. As maritime technology evolves and the demand for cruise experiences continues to grow, the industry must remain at the forefront of safety innovation, embracing new advancements and continuously refining existing protocols.

It is imperative for cruise lines to regularly assess and update their fleet to meet the latest safety standards. By conducting thorough inspections and implementing necessary upgrades, cruise ships can better withstand storms and minimize potential risks to passengers and crew. These regulatory measures aim to establish a more robust framework for ensuring the safety of passengers and crew members on board cruise ships. By holding cruise lines accountable and implementing necessary changes, regulatory bodies contribute to the overall improvement of safety standards in the industry.

“Myself being in emergency services and retired, I knew nobody was going to come rescue us with winds over 40 knots,” he told CBS News. Throughout the storm, several passengers also complained they were starting to feel sick due to the boat’s rough movements. The ship’s crew members were forced to evacuate their flooded quarters, according to a video shared on Twitter that shows the area in disarray. When the ship hit 70kts (80 mph) winds, Taylor said the captain slowed the ship and turned heading north-northeast heading directly into the storm.
In conclusion, the Carnival Sunshine storm incident of 2023 serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges and responsibilities inherent in maritime operations. While the incident unfolded without serious injuries or loss of life, it underscored the importance of preparedness, vigilance, and a commitment to safety at all levels. Collaboration between regulators and cruise lines can take the form of regular meetings, sharing of information, and joint initiatives aimed at addressing safety concerns. By working together, they can identify emerging risks and develop proactive measures to mitigate them. By embedding safety as a core value, cruise lines can create an environment where every employee feels responsible for safety and takes proactive measures to prevent accidents and incidents. Additionally, regulatory bodies have called for increased transparency and accountability from cruise lines regarding their safety protocols and contingency plans.
Forecasters from the NHC had visited the Carnival Cruise Line headquarters in Miami two days before the ship got caught in the powerful storm. The spokesperson added that the Carnival Sunshine is now sailing on a five-day Bahamas cruise and will return to Charleston on Thursday. Water damage and broken glass were left in the hallways and rooms following the storm. Carnival Paradise is on a five-day Caribbean cruise that departed from Tampa on Saturday, according to CruiseMapper.
One way to reinforce safety culture is through comprehensive training programs that address potential risks and provide employees with the necessary skills and knowledge to handle emergencies. These programs can include simulated scenarios, hands-on training, and regular drills to ensure that staff members are well-prepared to respond effectively in any situation. In the wake of the Carnival Sunshine Storm Incident, cruise lines across the industry have taken proactive steps to address safety concerns and reassure passengers of their commitment to their well-being.
Other major cruise lines followed suit, conducting safety audits and implementing new measures to enhance passenger safety during extreme weather conditions. These measures include the installation of advanced weather tracking systems, improved communication protocols, and enhanced training for crew members. Therefore, it is vital for cruise lines to have contingency plans in place to ensure the safety of their passengers and crew when faced with severe weather conditions.
One passenger posted a video of the interior of a cabin as the storm pounded the ship, adding that guests had been evacuated from one of the bars after over 30 liquor bottles fell off the bar and broke. "We had a 40 foot wave hit our side of the ship,.. we almost fell out the bed.. things were crashing all around us and the carpet on my side of the bed was soaked bc water came in thru our balcony door," Goodwin Sherbert wrote. The news comes after Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Apex ship rescued seven people in a small vessel adrift between Cuba and Mexico earlier this month. Another Carnival ship, Carnival Jubilee, also rescued two people stuck in a kayak off the coast of Mexico’s Isla Mujeres in January. Poor weather did continue past that point and all aboard were urged to use caution when moving about the ship. The outer decks remained closed, which is standard procedure in any foul weather.
Daniel Taylor, of Albemarle, North Carolina, was one of the passengers aboard the ship and reported water damage and communication outages, as well as high waves that battered the vessel. He spoke to FOX Weather after documenting his experience in a timeline of events. Passenger education and awareness are also crucial in promoting a culture of safety on board cruise ships. Informing passengers about safety measures, emergency procedures, and the importance of following instructions can help reduce panic and improve overall response during a crisis. Following the Carnival Sunshine storm incident of 2023, it has become imperative for the cruise industry to reevaluate and strengthen its approach to safety.
We look forward to having you. He had told me about Sushi Cruise a few times and had wanted to share the experience with me and my wife. We finally found a time to go.
Sadly I could not get a good photo that night, none were anywhere near good enough quality at night. I was impressed with the layout and vibe of the place though. It has an open floor plan with a great riverside view. It looks just as good at night as it does during the day. To say the least, I was very happy upon arrival.

Service was great at Sushi Cruise. Our server was both very involved in our experience and at the same time not there at all. He knew when the right times were to speak to us and not seem like he was interrupting and took cues greatly.

We enjoyed the Rainbow Roll which is a California roll topped with tuna, salmon, white fish, avocado and massago. We also enjoyed the Godzilla roll which was a deep fried tempura roll filled with crab meat, salmon, scallop, eel and avocado topped with an eel sauce. This was my favorite roll.

I am not going to go into detail about the other rolls so that I don't sound repetitive. But I would like to try to highlight the roll you see in the center of the photo above, the one with the jalapeno on it with messago. Unfortunately the name of it escapes me at this time, but it was on the special menu and had the right amount of kick to it.
I love a good seaweed salad to start off my meal at any Japanese restaurant. It just had a fresh taste and it's light enough to instantly leave wanting for more. Also, my uncle usually hates seaweed salad, but enjoyed this one. The innovative menu relies on simple preparations with dynamic flavors. I entered Sushi Cruise around 8pm and not during the day like pictured above.

It was after a long day at work and the wife had been feeling under the weather, so I met up with them on my own. I hated that the wife missed out, but I was happy that I was able to go. First because I always love to see my Uncle Anthony as I really do enjoy our conversations. Second, I enjoyed the restaurant. We value our service on using the most fresh ingredients with intricate craftsmanship in creating the dishes. The relaxed dining experience at Sushi Cruise is chic nonetheless.
I recommend to try it if you see anything on their specials menu that sounds like that. I do look to update this post when I can get the name of it and a good description. Experience our traditional & new style dining, an extensive roll selections, creative new additions in a zen and modern atmosphere. The restaurant is spacious, dining areas with a zen atmostphere, spectacular view of the NYC skyline located right in front of the Hudson River. Our professional staff is well experienced in and will give your next dining experience memorable.
Sushi Cruise made it easy to not worry about the meal and truly enjoy my time. The server was attentive. I happily give Sushi Cruise a 4 out of 5 stars. We started with the seaweed salad.

Passengers on cruise vessels have an inadequate appreciation of their potential vulnerability to crime while on ocean voyages, and those who may be victimized lack the information they need to understand their legal rights or to know whom to contact for help in the immediate aftermath of the crime. Princess cruises offers sailings around the world using a traditional, American-style cruise approach. Princess cruises are popular the world over with couple, families and premium travellers. With the diverse demographic groups motivated by cruise tourism, there comes a variety of cruise types. There is often a central galley responsible for serving all major restaurants aboard the ship, though specialty restaurants may have their own separate galleys.
Royal Caribbean
Cruise tourism refers to holidays which are entirely or partly based on a cruise ship. It enables tourists to experience a multi-centre holiday, whereby they spend time at various destinations throughout their trip. The number of cruise tourists worldwide in 2005 was estimated at some 14 million. The main region for cruising was North America (70% of cruises), where the Caribbean islands were the most popular destinations. Queen Mary 2 was for a time the largest passenger ship before being surpassed by Royal Caribbean International's Freedom-class vessels in 2006.
Norwegian Cruise Line

The Rotterdam was put on permanent cruise service, as was the France, albeit modified and renamed Norway in 1980, as part of Norwegian Cruise Line. This made the Norway, by then the largest passenger vessel in the world, the first "mega-cruise ship". Cunard, on the other hand, while putting the Queen Elizabeth 2 on more cruises, also maintained the regular transatlantic crossing tradition throughout the year, although with a stronger focus on leisure passengers, catering to a niche market of those who appreciated the several days at sea. International celebrities were hired to perform acts on board, along with cabarets, and with the addition of a casino and other entertainment amenities, the crossing was advertised as a vacation in itself. In essence, cruise tourism is a luxurious form of travelling, involving an all-inclusive holiday on a cruise ship of at least 24 hours, with a set and specific itinerary, in which the cruise ship calls at several ports or cities.
Cruising has become the fastest growing segment in the travel industry across the world and it’s no surprise with the wide variety of cruises on offer nowadays. As I mentioned, cruise tourism is a growing type of tourism around the world. This industry not only makes a large amount of income directly, but through its various industry partnerships and integration it also has the potential to reap significant financial rewards.
From luxury ocean liners to "megaship" cruising
Cruise tourism is characterised by the concentration of large numbers of people who visit one particular destination at the same time. Modern cruise ships are tall but remain stable due to their relatively low center of mass. This is due to large open spaces and the extensive use of aluminium, high-strength steel and other lightweight materials in the upper parts, and the fact that the heaviest components—engines, propellers, fuel tanks and such—are located at the bottom of the hull. Thus, even though modern cruise ships may appear tall, proper weight distribution ensures that they are not top-heavy.[91][92] Furthermore, large cruise ships tend to be very wide, which considerably increases their initial stability by increasing the metacentric height. Some UK cruise lines base their ships out of Barbados for the Caribbean season, operating direct charter flights out of the UK. Others operate elsewhere in places like Alaska, the South Pacific, the Baltic Sea and New England.
The first ‘megaships were built and cruise ships gradually became bigger and more luxurious with more onboard facilities than ever before. As the cruise industry evolves, so does the diversity of its packages offered to cruise tourists. Below I have listed a few examples of cruise ship packages from the Royal Caribbean International website. Offering everything from surfing to Broad Way shows, the cruise line is popular amongst a wide range of cruise tourists, including families, couples and solo travellers.

They also were the first series of cruise ships to include a multi-story lobby with a glass elevator and had a single deck devoted entirely to cabins with private balconies, instead of oceanview cabins. Other cruise lines soon launched ships with similar attributes, such as the Fantasy class, leading up to the Panamax-type Vista class, designed such that two-thirds of the oceanview staterooms have balconies. As the veranda suites were particularly lucrative for cruise lines, something which was lacking in older ocean liners, recent cruise ships have been designed to maximize such amenities and have been described as "balcony-laden floating condominiums". However, the reality is that this economic benefit is absorbed predominantly by the large corporations who own these cruise ships and there is very little economic benefit of cruise tourism to the destinations that host the tourists.
Cruise ships have a wide range of onboard features and there are cruise ship itineraries that cater for every corner of the globe. There are also smaller cruise lines that cater to a more intimate feeling among their guests. The three largest cruise operators are Carnival Corporation, Royal Caribbean International, and Star Cruises/Norwegian Cruise Lines. Ocean liner services aimed at passengers almost ceased in the 1970s and 1980s.

Expedition cruising is smaller in its scale, offering niche experiences with shore landings via an inflatable boat to access remote locations. The purpose of expedition cruising is to take part in a comprehensive educational experience. Whilst the large cruises that I have discussed above are perhaps the most well-known, there are in fact many different types of cruise, which are less high profile. Royal Caribbean International has announced that it will begin operations of its new Wonder of the Seas, in 2022. This ship will measure 1,188 feet long, 217 feet wide and will feature 18 decks and 2,867 staterooms.
As I discussed earlier, river cruising is becoming an increasingly popular choice of cruising among cruise tourists. Yacht cruising is particularly small in scale when we compare the form of cruising to luxury or mega cruising. However, yacht cruising can be similar to luxury cruising in that it is a very expensive form of cruise tourism and can have very high standards of service and facilities on board. Cruise ships vary from small yachts to mega ships and can take place on the ocean, river or fjords. Cruise tourism is popular in the Caribbean, Mediterranean and Arctic amongst other destinations. Cruise tourism is essentially a form of enclave tourism and it encompasses all faces of the tourism industry- accommodation, transportation, hospitality and attractions.
Alcohol purchased duty-free is sealed and returned to passengers when they disembark. With the advent of large passenger jet aircraft in the 1960s, intercontinental travelers switched from ships to planes, sending the ocean liner trade into a terminal decline. Certain characteristics of older ocean liners made them unsuitable for cruising duties, such as high fuel consumption, deep draught preventing them from entering shallow ports, and cabins (often windowless) designed to maximize passenger numbers rather than comfort. (Passengers in cabins in certain grades on the Queen Elizabeth 2 had access only to certain dining rooms). Contemporary cruise ships built in the late 1980s and later, such as the Sovereign class which broke the size record held for decades by Norway, showed characteristics of size once reserved for ocean liners. The Sovereign-class ships were the first "megaships" to be built specifically for the mass cruising market.
Because their every need is catered for onboard, cruise tourists typically spend little money in the destinations that they visit, meaning that the local people reap few rewards for this type of tourism. In addition to this, cruise tourism can have devastating impacts on the natural environment when ships dock in shallow waters or when garbage is not disposed of responsibly. And last but not least, large numbers of tourists visiting a destination at one time can have adverse effects, with overtourism being a distinct problem around the world that often results from cruise tourism. Among cruise lines, some are direct descendants of the traditional passenger shipping lines (such as Cunard), while others were founded from the 1960s specifically for cruising. Yachts hold fewer passengers than other cruise vessels and usually a family or group of people will hire the entire yacht and cruise the seas. There are many places that are popular for the cruise tourism, such as hiring a yacht in Greece or a Whitsunday yacht charter in Australia.
Wonder of the Seas will sail 7-night itineraries to the eastern and western Caribbean. A cruise ship that is moving from one of these regions to another will commonly operate a repositioning cruise while doing so. Expedition cruise lines, which usually operate small ships, visit certain more specialized destinations such as the Arctic and Antarctica, or the Galápagos Islands. Typically, cruise ships will hold no more than 100 to 200 passengers, whereas ocean cruises can hold many thousands.
He told the court he called the retired captain to see exactly where he lived so he knew when to sound the cruise ship horn. Round the world cruises are quite literally cruises that travel around the world. The facilities on board a river course is kept to a minimum and are restricted due to the smaller size of the ship (it needs to fit down the river!).
By investing in advanced technology and collaborating with meteorological agencies, cruise lines can better anticipate and navigate through adverse weather conditions. Additionally, developing onboard systems that provide real-time weather updates to both crew and passengers can greatly enhance situational awareness. The installation of advanced propulsion systems and stabilizers can help maintain ship stability during adverse weather conditions.
The Brewing Storm: Weather Forecasts and Initial Warnings
She said that the only time passengers heard from the captain was in the afternoon, when he told them he had an experienced crew and would do everything he could to minimize discomfort as the ship encountered the storm. By implementing these lessons learned, the cruise industry can significantly enhance the safety and preparedness of its ships, ultimately ensuring a more secure and enjoyable experience for passengers. The incident shed light on the importance of ship design and safety features in mitigating the impact of extreme weather events. Cruise ships should be built with reinforced structures and improved stability to withstand rough seas and high winds. These first-hand accounts serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sea and the importance of preparedness in the cruise industry.

He said he's not going to let the frightening experience stop him from going on more cruises in the future. She tweeted again on Saturday afternoon, describing "14 hours of high winds, rain and massive waves." In 2016, Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas returned to port after cruising into a “bomb cyclone,” which damaged the ship amid winds gusting to 100 mph. The ship sailed into the remnants of Hurricane Hermine seven months later, causing additional problems.

The captain was expecting rougher weather that evening, but there was nothing to worry about. As maritime technology evolves and the demand for cruise experiences continues to grow, the industry must remain at the forefront of safety innovation, embracing new advancements and continuously refining existing protocols. Another important aspect of continuous improvement is the analysis of near-miss incidents and accidents.
Despite Carnival's recent problems, the brand is still used by almost 50 percent of worldwide cruise passengers.
Some passengers and crew members needed "minor assistance" from medical staff, a Carnival cruise spokesman told CBS News. Passenger education and awareness are also crucial in promoting a culture of safety on board cruise ships. Informing passengers about safety measures, emergency procedures, and the importance of following instructions can help reduce panic and improve overall response during a crisis. Royal Caribbean said Monday that 48 guests and crew members on the Symphony of the Seas — the world's biggest cruise ship — tested positive for COVID-19. According to Royal Caribbean, they were among 6,091 people on the ship during the December 11 sailing. The COVID-positive guests and crew members were quarantined on board as a result.

By examining the root causes and underlying factors, cruise lines can identify trends and patterns that may indicate systemic issues. By embedding safety as a core value, cruise lines can create an environment where every employee feels responsible for safety and takes proactive measures to prevent accidents and incidents. It is imperative for cruise lines to prioritize the well-being of their guests and constantly strive for innovation and improvement in all aspects of ship operations. Additionally, implementing advanced technologies, such as improved communication systems and emergency evacuation drills, can further enhance passenger safety during storms. The Carnival Sunshine Storm Incident serves as a reminder of the importance of continuously evaluating and improving ship design to enhance safety measures. This article delves into the details of the Carnival Sunshine storm incident, providing a comprehensive analysis of the events that unfolded, the potential risks involved, and the lessons learned from this near-disaster.
Passengers were required to be vaccinated and they were tested before leaving last Saturday, according to Carnival. The ship, the Carnival Freedom, departed from Miami on Dec. 18 on an eight-day cruise when “a small number on board” were isolated because of a positive coronavirus test, the cruise line said in a statement. Carnival Sunshine, which was headed from the Bahamas to South Carolina, arrived in Charleston behind schedule, according to the spokesman. Some crew cabins needed to be temporarily taken out of service because of water damage. Pete Peterson, owner of Storybook Cruises, which is affiliated with Cruise Planners, said cruise ships keep a close eye on weather developments and will adjust their itinerary depending on the severity of the storm. By doing so, the cruise industry can foster a culture of safety that prioritizes the well-being of passengers and crew, transforming every voyage into an adventure marked by both enjoyment and unwavering safety.

Carnival has already offered passengers a refund, cruise credit, and $500, but this disaster may prove too big to be solved with money. Thirty passengers aboard the Costa Concordia lost their lives, and as of December 2012, two were still missing. One year later, Carnival launched 'Paradise,' the first non-smoking cruise ship in the world. In 1997, Carnival launched 'Destiny,' the first cruise ship in the world to weigh more than 100,000 tons.
The bad weather the formed in the Atlantic this weekend gave crew and passengers on board Carnival Sunshine a rough ride Saturday. The three ships are set to be the first Carnival ships to carry guests as the line plans to return to service this July.
By working together, they can identify emerging risks and develop proactive measures to mitigate them. The industry’s response to the Carnival Sunshine Storm Incident demonstrates its dedication to learning from past mistakes and prioritizing passenger safety. Cruise lines are continually striving to ensure that incidents like this are minimized, if not completely avoided, in the future.
It was the third outbreak this week affecting cruise ships operated by Carnival and Royal Caribbean departing Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Ashley Peterson, a passenger on the ship, tweeted a photo of a December 22 letter from the ship's captain apologizing for being unable to make stops in Aruba and Bonaire. The letter said passengers would get $100 per room in onboard credit, as well refunds for planned excursions. At one point, emergency medical workers were sent in to tend to ill passengers waiting to board the ship, taking patients away on stretchers. But cruise ship economics are unforgiving, it's not what the passengers pay to book their cruise that counts, it's what they spend once they're on board that moves the bottom line. After almost a week of being stranded with no running water or air conditioning, passengers who suffered aboard the 'Triumph' ship are already starting to sue Carnival over the conditions they endured.
From reinforced hulls to stabilizers that counteract the motion of the ship, various measures are taken to enhance the ship’s stability and safety. Meanwhile, rescue vessels were dispatched to assist in the evacuation of passengers if necessary. The crew’s training and preparedness were put to the test as they worked diligently to keep everyone safe. On May 27, 2023, the Carnival Sunshine found itself in the midst of a powerful storm. Passengers and crew members were advised to stay in their cabins and secure any loose objects. One woman has died and 10 others were injured after a shuttle bus crashed into the transportation area outside a Honolulu cruise terminal Friday, according to police.
A leak from a hose on engine No. 6 led to a fire early on Feb. 10 as the ship returned from a stop in Cozumel, Mexico. More than 4,000 people aboard endured a nightmarish tow to Mobile, Ala., that the plaintiffs' attorney called a "floating hell." According to Carnival's website, in 1972 "the company’s first cruise ship, the TSS Mardi Gras, runs aground on a sandbar during its inaugural voyage." A month later, just as the incident was fading from the public eye, the diesel generator in the Carnival Dream malfunctioned, while the ship was at port, and passengers were flown home. Matthew Branham and his fiancée, Madison Davis, were lying by a Carnival Sunshine pool on Friday aboard a cruise returning to Charleston, S.C., from the Bahamas when an announcement came over the loudspeaker.
The next week, Carnival Legend had a technical issue with its sailing speed, and was sent back to its destination in Tampa, canceling a scheduled stop. She has previously written for outlets including PIX11 News, The New York Daily News, Inside Edition and DNAinfo. "We had a 40 foot wave hit our side of the ship,.. we almost fell out the bed.. things were crashing all around us and the carpet on my side of the bed was soaked bc water came in thru our balcony door," Goodwin Sherbert wrote.
